Moldy Attics

One of the major areas where mold will grow in your home is in the attic. Some of the issues causing mold to grow are too much moisture, bad ventilation or a leaky roof. Homeowners usually don't find out that mold is growing until it is too late, because they are selling their home and it showed up on the inspection report.

Your attic should be properly ventilated ( attic fan, soffits, gable vents )creating the correct air flow. Many times when I am evauating an attic for mold the homeowners has covered the soffit vents to keep the cold air out. Soffit vents are there for a reason to keep the air flowing through the attic and taking any moisture with it. If your attic is properly insulated the cold air will not affect your living space.

Evaluate your attic a few times a year to see if you have any mold growing on the sheathing or roof joist. If you see something that concerns you call a professional or do your own research on the internet.
